Que Cinco

   by Kristin S. vanNamen

I say, mi nombre es cinco, que cinco is the bed that I sleep in. I say this when el chico at the window ask me my name. El chico, he come with los chicos malos de la cuidad. Los chicos come at night. Peer in through las ventanas a las chicas locas locked away. El chico, he like me best of all. He say, el cinco es el número, no es un nombre. He say, stupid girl. He call me chica loca número cinco.

Otra vez, he ask me my name. No lo sé. I don't know my name. No one use my name. No one use my name in so many years. Locked away with las chicas locas in one large room. No me acuerdo. I can't remember, pero I had un nombre. I had un nombre one once.

New ones, las new ones have algunos nombres. When I first got here, like the new ones, like the chicas locas they find sitting in the middle of the highway all naked and bring here. Rock y rock con los split wrists and red eyes. Chicas locas, the new ones come in crazy, pero they know their names. Linda y Sandy y Dulce y Maria y Mariposa y MujerGata. Okay, maybe MujerGata no know her name. She make believe. Qué chica loca, huh?

They forget, once you here you stay here. Las chicas locas locked away in one large room. All crowded. Cien. Ciento uno. Ciento dos. Ciento tres. Todos nosotros. Locked away from los machos locos upstairs, too. Pero we hear los machos locos scream that how we know they there. We can't see los machos locos locked away upstairs, pero they scream and tap down pipes. Uno-dos, uno-dos—uno-dos-tres.

El chico, he call me chica loca número cinco, y that okay conmigo. Me gusta el chico quién come at night. He come to visit todas las chicas in the dark. Like me best. Arrive with los otros chicos malos de la cuidad. Los chicos malos pick on us. Sneak up at night después de los médicos y las nurses go home. Los chicos from la ciudad sneak up and spit on us through locked up screens, make noises como cerdos y burros. Make noises and Seis y Siete, they cry. Seis y Siete so scared como pollitas y Seis she pee on her mattress, pero les gustan estar pollitas.

We play, los chicos malos y las chicas locas play through big open ventanas con locked up screens. Screens sealed shut, so las chicas locas can't escape. Once you here, you stay here. Las chicas locas, we have the night staff después de los médicos y las nurses go home and night staff have the rounds. Las chicas locas, we know las rutinas del night staff con clock works. We play con los chicos de la ciudad y el chico, he like me best of all.

We play, el chico y yo play through big open ventanas con locked up screens. El chico, he bring me snowcones grape y cherry y orange y peach. He push the icy snowcone up in the screen. I put mi boca on the screen. El chico, he push the snowcone frio, I suck con mi boca. I suck y lick el dulce from the screen. I say, it so sweet. Stain mi boca purple. dulce, dulce, dulce. He give it to me. Solamente me, el chico he like me best.

El chico, he like me so much talk crazy back. He think I'm a bird. He say, mi pajarita. He say, tu vives en una jaula. Say he set me free. Someday. He come late at night, he come late, he come not with los chicos malos de la ciudad. El chico, he come alone. Wake me up. On mi ventana, he go taptap taptap—taptaptap.

They forget, the new ones make me remember I forget my name. I think hard. I think maybe I'm una Maria y una Sandy y quizás the princess Gabriella. But I look around and see Seis, she pee on the mattress, otra vez. I look around and see Siete, she goes shit on the floor. Not just her shit, lots of shit. Lots of shit on the floor. Yo soy La Princesa de Caca. Once a week, los night staff bring in the hose. Once a week, staff hose out the shit, they put hose on us, too, to see us wet y run. See us run around como los pollitas y el número Seis she cry otra vez. Pero yo no. Yo no lloro. I don't cry. I stand on mi mattress, pull up mi ropa. I stand high y shake shake shake for los night staff. Pero, los night staff no le gusta. Los night staff say, número cinco, número cinco Siéntate Siéntate. Número cinco, número cinco Siéntate Siéntate.

New ones, we get mucho más new ones. Las chicas locas locked away in one large room. Cien. Ciento cuatro. Ciento cinco. Ciento seis. Todos nosotros. All crowded, pero we get mucho más. Las chicas locas, we all downstairs locked away from the crazy men upstairs. Los médicos y las nurses no les gustan las new ones. Say new ones bad, new ones don't know las rutinas. Los médicos y las nurses, they put the new ones en la jaula outside. La jaula all metal y alta. Las new ones cry y wrap las dedos in the metal of la jaula y shake y shake y cry. Los new ones, they rock y they squat. Outside all naked and rocking, squatting on dirt, so scared. Come back late with burn skin from el sol. Skin all red y blister, new ones naked and rock. New ones let back inside, get on sus mattresses y rock. They learn las rutinas fast, get good and forget their names.

Otra vez, el chico at the window he no ask me my name. He say, chica loca número cinco Levántate Levántate. He say, chica loca número cinco Levántate Levántate. El chico, he cut the screen wide open. El número Seis y Siete y Ocho y Tres y Dos, they jump y they run. Pero yo no. Ellas saltan por la cut screen wide open. Ellas corren. Gone. Pero yo no. El chico at the window like me best. He say otra vez, Levántate Levántate, Mujer.

I say, mi nombre es cinco, que cinco is the bed that I sleep in. I say, once you here you stay. If I go out, I get crazy and los médicos y las nurses, they find me squat in the middle of the highway all naked con los dos split wrists and red eyes. Yo soy una pollita. Make believe yo soy una pollita. Squat down, lift up mi ropa, pee on my mattress. Listen to the crazy men upstairs. El chico, he no leave me alone. El chico, he climb in through split screen wide open. El chico con warm breath y eyes azules. He touch me, touch mi boca. I feel him at mi boca. His dedo touch on mi boca. Dedo va taptap taptap—taptaptap.
